Sherry Witt, Register of Deeds

Sherry Witt became the Knox County Register of Deeds in September 2026, continuing her career as a public servant to the citizens of Knox County. She previously served in the Register’s office as Chief Deputy and Register from 2007 – 2018. She most recently held the position of County Clerk from 2018 – 2026. She holds the distinguished honor of being the first female to represent Knox County in each of these roles.

A lifelong resident of Knox County, Sherry is a graduate from Fulton High School and obtained a bachelor’s degree from the University of Tennessee. Early in her career, she earned the designation of Certified Public Administrator from University of Tennessee through their County Technical Assistance Service (CTAS) program. She is also a graduate of the CTAS Local Leadership Program.

Sherry has been involved in numerous organizations on a state and local level throughout her time in office. She is the former President of the Tennessee Registers Association as well as the East Tennessee Registers Association. In 2014, she was recognized by her peers as Outstanding Register of the Year. She has also served on numerous committees for the County Officials Association of Tennessee (COAT), most recently representing the County Clerks on the COAT Board.

Civic involvement continues to be an important part of her life. Sherry is a former member of the Advisory Board of the Knoxville Boys and Girls Club. She was a long serving board member for the Free Medical Clinic of America. She is active in the business and professional associations of North Knoxville, Halls, Powell, and Fountain City. She is a member of the League of Women Voters, the East Tennessee Suffrage Coalition. She has held numerous positions within the Knox County Republican Party. She has been the President and Vice-President of the Knox County Republican Women’s Club and Fountain City Republican Club.

Sherry is a member and faithful attender of Corryton Church in northeast Knox County. She resides in the Fountain City area and has been blessed with two daughters, a bonus son, and three grandchildren.

Knox County Register of Deeds Nick McBride has chosen Barry Vest to serve as the office’s Chief Deputy. “Barry’s knowledge, professionalism and personality will enable him to help our customers and be a leader within the office. His experience in the title business and with the various documents that we record is a great asset.”

A Knoxville native, Barry graduated from Halls High School in 1994. He then spent three years in retail management before building a career in the property title business.

Barry currently lives in Fountain City where he raises his 12-year-old son, Landon. He is very involved in youth sports and for the past four years volunteered as the head football coach at Halls for the KMYFL League.
